The Pilgrimage – The Road To The Scottish Isles : Episode 1 from Donegal and Derry.

The Pilgrimage Bbc – Donegal and Derry

Seven popular characters with varying faiths and beliefs put on their backpacks and waterproofs and set out on foot, by roadway and sea, travelling over 1,600 km to find out about an essential figure in early British Christianity, St Columba: an Irish monk born 1,500 years ago who assisted spread the faith from Ireland to Scotland. This first episode is a great portrayal of Donegal and Derry for any travellers or visitors.

The Pilgrimage Bbc

With only 15 days to finish their pilgrimage, they start their adventure in Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, St Columba’s birthplace. From here, they make their method to Northern Ireland, checking out Londonderry, likewise referred to as Derry, where Columba is patron saint. After crossing the North Channel to western Scotland, their trip takes them through stunning landscapes into the Highlands. They explore the Outer Hebrides prior to heading back south to reach their last location, the small island of Iona and the site of Columba’s most famous monastic settlement.

Following ancient courses and heritage walking routes are interior designer and non-conforming pagan Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen; England cricketing legend and practising Sikh Monty Panesar; star Louisa Clein, who is Jewish; TV character and agnostic Nick Hewer; social media influencer and Christian Scarlett Moffatt; comedian and Muslim Shazia Mirza; and Paralympian and lapsed Christian Will Bayley. They will live as modern-day pilgrims.

The pilgrims will visit essential places of worship and rural neighbourhoods, however will this journey of a lifetime alter the method they think about themselves and their beliefs?

In this first episode, six of the pilgrims – Nick, Laurence, Scarlett, Monty, Louisa and Shazia – meet for the very first time in the market town of Donegal. Due to an international sports occasion, Will is delayed and will not sign up with the group for a couple of days. Until he does, they’re left to question who the seventh pilgrim will be.

It’s a moist start as they head out of Donegal Town towards the Atlantic coast and the first place of significance on their pilgrimage– a glen called after Columba. As they leave the town, the pilgrims’ first encounter with belief has nothing to do with Christianity, but rather Irish folklore and Celtic mythology, when they discover a fairy tree, total with tiny doors and coins for desires.

As they travel further west towards Columba’s valley, they begin learning more about each other. Shazia reveals that, despite being a practising Muslim, her Mum and Dad sent her to a Catholic school, so she was always knowledgeable about St Columba. When they reach the remarkable Atlantic coast, Laurence sparks off a lively discussion about faith.

The Pilgrimage Bbc

After 3 hours, the pilgrims reach the outskirts of Glencolmcille, Gaelic for ‘the Valley of Columba’, where The Pilgrims will spend their opening night. Nevertheless, the walking is already triggering problems for Scarlett, whose leg is beginning to harm. Exhausted and damp, the pilgrims check out their hostel and are welcomed in Gaelic, the regional language. Pilgrim life indicates sharing spaces, and the merry band commemorate their first supper together.

It’s day two, and not everybody has slept well. Nick grumbles he’s had a dreadful night, and Laurence feels ‘each and every single minute’ of his 57 years. Scarlett’s leg is still offering her trouble, and sportsperson Monty offers to assist her with some workouts to relieve the pain.

Before leaving the valley, the pilgrims set out for a historic regional expedition path, Turas Cholmcille. At the Stone of Gathering, Scarlett pulls out a little wooden cross and discusses it makes her feel safe when she’s far from her household. However, some of the other pilgrims’ small talk makes her feel uneasy and she gets emotional. She discusses that a few of their conversations are too ‘jokey’ which without God, she would not have actually got through some actually dark times.

Scarlett Moffett

The Stone of Sorrows, where Columba is said to have actually been born, is their next destination, but en route, Laurence, Shazia and Nick take a wrong turn and wind up on private property. Shocked to see trespassers from ‘world showbiz’, Shazia discusses to the owner that they are ‘very lost, spiritually and actually.’

Reunited, the group head for the Stone of Sorrows. Scarlett and Monty lay on the stone and state a quiet prayer, however the stone represents homesickness and isolation, and Louisa stands back as being up until now away from her household is making her upset.

Next, the pilgrims make their way to Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Shazia, Laurence, and Nick head to a late 18th-century Anglican church cherished by both Protestants and Catholics. On the other hand, Monty welcomes Louisa and Scarlett to a gurdwara, a Sikh temple, where he reveals that he has struggled with depression in the past, which checked his faith.

The Pilgrimage Bbc

Prior to the pilgrims leave Derry, they attend a service at St Columba’s, a Roman Catholic church that is celebrating the birth of St Columba 1,500 years earlier. Nevertheless, it stirs up unexpected feelings for Louisa, who is Jewish, as it makes her want to go to synagogue. This episode of The Pilgrimage Bbc showcases the beauty and tranquility of Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way plus the diversity, openness and how far forward Derry has come. Again, a must watch and must visit to mark off your bucket list of travels for the remainder of 2022 or 2023.

Derry Girls, The Cast And The Derry Girls Mural 2023

What’s All The Fuss About The Derry Girls?

Lisa McGee, a wee local girl, who was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, and studied drama at Queen’s University, Belfast. She was writer on attachment with the Royal National Theatre in London in 2006. McGee is the creator and writer of Derry Girls, a comedy series that began airing on Channel 4 in the UK in January 2018. Other programmes and work included Raw and Girls & Dolls and she hales as a screenwriter and writer.

Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee 2023

Derry Girls follows five teenagers in a Catholic school in Northern Ireland during the 1990s. The show follows five teenagers in a Catholic school during the 1990s, when Northern Ireland was gripped by sectarian violence between Catholics and Protestants known as “The Troubles”.

Derry is a City with much to say for itself.

Five miles from the border with the Republic of Ireland, and profoundly affected by decades of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, it is also renowned for its unique sense of humour.
The city’s personality is a patchwork in which the scars of war and social injustice run alongside razor-sharp wit, brutal put-downs, and a stream of outrageous anecdotes about local eccentrics. This comparison was impossible to explain to outsiders who had never visited – until Derry Girls came along.
The hit Channel 4 show follows the misadventures of four teenage girls (and one “wee English fella”) facing the everyday challenges of growing up against the backdrop of sectarian conflict. It is the brainchild of writer Lisa McGee, who based much of it on her formative years at an all-girls school ( Thornhill College) in the city.
“I always wanted to write about my friends, and the whole convent school thing, because I thought it was hilarious,” says McGee. “The whole backdrop of the Troubles happened very naturally because that was just what was happening.”
The first series was a wild comic romp that involved the girls burning down a chip shop, digging up a dead dog and bearing witness to a statue of the Virgin Mary weeping with what turned out to be dog piss.

Derry Girls New Show at Free Derry Corner
“It’s inspired by real things that happened to my family and friends,” says McGee, “but then I push things further for the comedy. I always wanted it to have an urban myth quality too – that we’ve all heard these stories, but these girls are the people that those things actually happen to.”
When it comes to their representation, the people of Derry can be a discerning lot – something she was all too aware of when putting pen to paper. “I thought to myself, this needs to be good, or I’ll never be able to go back home again!”
When the show premiered, the response in Derry was unprecedented. From WhatsApp groups to Facebook posts, everyone was pointing out the phrases and scenarios they recognised, and the characters people most resembled. It quickly became the most-watched TV series in Northern Ireland since records began.
“We couldn’t have wished for a better response,” says Nicola Coughlan, who plays the ever-anxious Clare. “I said to the others beforehand, the Derry people are very honest. If they don’t like our show, they’ll let us know. But they are so proud of it, and they treat us so well when we go there.”
The success continues and the show receives an international rollout on Netflix. Across review sites and social media, new fans are drawn in by the familiar sight of awkward teenagers embarrassing themselves. Derry Girls has truly gone global.

While the Troubles might not be widely understood in far-off countries, its setting actually struck some unexpected chords.

Coughlan recalls one of many comments she received about the show on Twitter.
“I got a message from a girl who grew up in the Kashmir region, and she said this is exactly what it was like for me growing up in a political divide. I hadn’t thought it would resonate like that – I just thought that was amazing.”
The cast say that while they expected it to do well in Ireland, they were unsure of how well it would translate, having been so faithful to Derry’s niche sense of humour; from put-downs like “dose” (basically, a person who’s a pain in the neck) and “shite the tights” (a nervous person), to the stresses of ordering from the chippy on a Friday night, or fleeing the town before the Orange Order march on 12 July.
Louisa Harland, who plays dim-witted Orla, is from Dublin. “Only people from Derry will understand how many in-jokes are littered within it. There’s even one or two that I didn’t get! But the thing is, it’s so layered. There’s jokes for Derry people and then there’s jokes for everyone.”

Derry Girls New Mural 2023 - Orchard Street Derry

Now, more and more people are visiting the city to get in on the joke. Derry’s tourism industry has been growing since the turn of the millennium, with many people coming not just to learn about the political history and Derry tours, but to enjoy the nightlife, the annual jazz festival, halloween parades and other cultural treats.
Murals that commemorate key figures and incidents from the Troubles are also a curious part of the attraction. Typically, these reflect on the darker moments in our past, but a few weeks ago, the Derry Girls made for a unique new addition.
“It took four and half days to put it up,” says Karl Porter, who works with local group UV Arts. “People were coming along to watch, just being curious and nosey. Obviously, we’re used to the murals showing our history, but this is about showing a new side. People were pleasantly surprised.”
Pictures were going viral even before it was finished, and already, it has become a new tourist attraction. The actors say when they came to see themselves immortalised for the first time, it took their breath away.
Ruairi O’hEara who runs Tours of Derry, which takes groups, universities, colleges and visitors on walks around the city’s historic walls and town centre. He has been taken aback by the interest from foreign tourists.

Derry Tours Derry Girls Tour
“Last week I had a group of 50 or 60 kids from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and the first thing they said to me was, ‘Where’s the Derry Girls mural?’ I couldn’t believe it. There’s been about seven other groups now asking the same thing, gap year students from the US, from Spain, all over.”
Ruairi says this fits in with a new phenomenon of screen production tourism enjoyed where Game of Thrones is filmed in Belfast and has the best Game of Thrones tour from Belfast, and at locations across the island which are featured in the Star Wars franchise. Now, just weeks after this new mural was painted, it seems no one can visit Derry without a selfie in front of it.
This tribute to the Derry Girls stirs a local pride which runs deeper than mere enjoyment of the show. For many, it’s a reminder of the crucial role women played during the city’s troubled past.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who stars as the lead character Erin, says this is the very essence of the show. “It was the women who were keeping the families going through those years, working in the shirt factories and keeping the house, it was bred down through the generations.
“Derry women are strong, they know what they want, they’re sassy, courageous, brave, and they look after each other. But they’ll let you know when you’ve got above your station too. It’s a sisterhood.”
The beauty of Derry Girls is that it doesn’t attempt to show a positive side of the city in isolation from, or in contrast to, the conflicts of our past. Instead, it shows comedy as a coping mechanism, which carried people through repeated hardships. In writing the show, Lisa McGee says this became all the more evident to her.
“It’s so impressive when you look back and think what our families protected us from and lived through and coped with, and what became normal. I think the fearlessness and the humour that we dealt with is so admirable.”

Derry Girls on location in Derry
“It feels like everyone’s show, everyone is so proud of it, and Derry people are great, funny, interesting people. There’s more to us than our history, we have other stories to tell.”

Waterfall caves

So today I had the great pleasure of visiting the wonderful waterfall caves that sit at the foot of the beautiful and eye catching binevenagh mountain at Magilligan.

After the beautiful drives from Derry City I stopped by St Aidans church and Holy Well which is believed to be a pre Christian spiritual Site that is believed to date back to the 13th century.
As I arrived at the top of the hill I was blown away with the magnificent panoramic views…..

Meeting Paula and her husband was a pleasure and they where more than happy to tell me about the place …… the land is steeped in history and it’s a playground for the explorer!
Luxury cave dwellings sit by beautiful spring water lakes and space for an abundance of outdoor activities such as fishing, snorkelling, cycling, mountain climbing as well as incredible forest trail walks.

The place is a fisherman’s paradise with 2 stocked rainbow trout lakes which is nettled in mature woodland of 20 acres…. it’s a great place for fly fishing as well as bait fishing .
A perfect retreat for couples as well as groups

Delicaton Choir Group

A group that stands out the most for me this week has to be the Delicaton Choir group who have arrived in Derry from Frankfurt in Germany for our annual Derry city International Choir Fest which has been on all week throughout our city.

Guided Walking Tour on Derrys walls

The Delicaton Choir group will be performing at All Saints Clooney on this Saturday coming, and I can say that they really are amazing to listen to!!
On Tuesday all 32 of them joined me on my Derry City walking tour.
I met up with this lovely group at their hotel before we made our way over to the City Walls of Derry. They had a great interest in our local history. After passing and explaining the history of the Guildhall, the Fountain Estate, and St Columbs Cathedral we made our way down into the heart of the Bogside where we covered important topics like the Civil Rights Movement, the Battle of the Bogside, Bloody Sunday, and the current peace process. Like most visitors who come on my tours, they where extremely impressed with the thought provoking Bogside Murals and the Monuments in the area.
The following day I met up with Sonja and her group once again and we headed up to An Grianan of Aileach and Fort Dunree. We then took an incredible guided tour of Doagh Famine village in County Donegal….. One of my favourite stops! 🙂
